Vuforia has sent a notice to its customers: Vuforia Cloud Recognition reaches its end of life on May 2, 2027. After that date, all cloud target databases will be deleted and apps that use them will stop recognizing images.
This week Vuforia (owned by PTC) emailed its customers that the Vuforia Engine Cloud Image Recognition service is being retired. Many AR apps use it to recognize printed images, so a lot of live projects will need a new solution before the deadline.
After 8th Wall, Meta Spark AR and Adobe Aero, this is another AR service shutting down. Here is what we know so far, what you can do now and which alternatives are available.
What is Vuforia Cloud Recognition?
Vuforia Cloud Recognition (officially Cloud Image Recognition) is a service inside Vuforia Engine. The app sends a camera image to Vuforia’s servers, the server finds the matching image target, and the app starts tracking it and shows the AR content.
Developers used it because of two things:
- Scale. A device database inside the app holds up to 1,000 image targets. A cloud database can search millions.
- Updates without a new app release. New targets are uploaded to the cloud and work right away, so catalogs, magazines, packaging and posters can be added at any time.
That is why it powers AR platforms, white label apps, printed catalogs and books, where the list of targets keeps growing.
Vuforia Cloud Recognition end of life: what is changing?
According to Vuforia’s notice to customers:
- Until May 2, 2027: the service stays fully operational. Existing apps and cloud databases keep working as they do today, and existing customers can still renew their subscriptions.
- On May 2, 2027: Cloud Image Recognition and its target databases are switched off and permanently deleted.
- No migration path: Vuforia will not offer a direct migration to another Vuforia service. Customers are asked to find an alternative that fits their use case.
The notice covers the cloud recognition service. It does not mention device databases or the Vuforia Engine itself.
Is Vuforia being discontinued?
No. The announcement is about Cloud Image Recognition only. Vuforia Engine, with on-device image targets, model targets and the rest of its features, is not part of this notice. If your app uses only device databases bundled in the app, confirm with Vuforia support, but the notice does not cover it.
What to do now
Six months is not much time once you count development, app store reviews and getting users to install the update. My suggestions:
- Find every app that uses Cloud Recognition. Check your Vuforia developer account for cloud databases and note which apps and clients use them.
- Export your target images. Keep a copy of every target image and its metadata outside Vuforia. After the deadline the databases are gone for good.
- Check which targets still get scans. Old campaigns may not need a replacement at all.
- Pick a replacement. See the alternatives below.
- Release the app update early. Users need the new version installed before the old one stops working.
- Tell your clients. If you are an agency, let them know now.
Vuforia Cloud Recognition alternatives
The right replacement depends mostly on how many targets you have and how often you add new ones.
1. Vuforia device databases
If you have fewer than 1,000 targets and they rarely change, you can move them into a device database inside the app. You stay on Vuforia Engine, so the tracking and the rest of the app code stay the same.
Limits: up to 1,000 image targets per database, and every new target needs a new app release or a downloaded database.
2. ARKit and ARCore image detection
Apple and Google both have built-in image detection on the phone.
- ARCore (Android): up to 1,000 reference images per database, and up to 20 images tracked at the same time. Images can also be added while the app runs.
- ARKit (iOS): Apple recommends around 100 detection images at a time, with up to 4 tracked at once.
Limits: both work with smaller sets of images, and you need to build and maintain two separate integrations, one for each platform.
3. Another cloud recognition service
A few AR SDKs offer their own cloud recognition. EasyAR Cloud Recognition Service (CRS), for example, supports up to 100,000 targets managed through a web console or API.
Limits: you switch to a different AR SDK, so the recognition and tracking code in your app has to be rewritten. Check pricing, data center locations and how long the vendor has supported the product.
4. Your own recognition service
Teams with developers can build their own matching service with open source computer vision libraries such as OpenCV, then hand the recognized image to the AR engine for tracking.
Limits: you own the servers, the accuracy testing and the maintenance. It takes the most work, but no vendor can switch it off.
5. Overlyapp
If you are an agency or a brand looking for an alternative to Vuforia Cloud Recognition, we can offer one. Tell us about your project, and we will suggest the best solution for your situation. If you are also reviewing browser based options, see our list of the best WebAR platforms.

FAQ
When does Vuforia Cloud Recognition shut down?
On May 2, 2027. Until then the service stays fully operational for existing customers.
Is Vuforia being discontinued?
No. Only the Cloud Image Recognition service is being retired. The notice does not cover Vuforia Engine itself.
What happens to my cloud target databases?
After May 2, 2027 they are permanently deleted. Export your target images and metadata before then.
Will my app keep working until May 2027?
Yes. According to Vuforia, existing apps and databases keep working normally until the end-of-life date.
Can I still renew my Cloud Recognition subscription?
Yes. Existing customers can keep renewing during the notice period.
Does Vuforia offer a migration path?
No. Vuforia will not provide a direct migration for Cloud Recognition customers.
What is the best alternative to Vuforia Cloud Recognition?
It depends on the number of targets. Under 1,000 targets, a Vuforia device database or ARCore and ARKit image detection can work. For larger or growing sets, you need a cloud recognition service, such as EasyAR CRS, or your own. Overlyapp can also offer an alternative for agencies and brands.
We have contacted Vuforia for more details. As soon as we get them, we will update this article.
